The Powder Damsel is a simple fly in terms of materials, but it remains an excellent imitation of a damselfly nymph. Its design can be easily adapted to different lakes by adjusting the colour of the marabou, which makes up much of the pattern.
The name “Powder Damsel” is believed to originate from the old Powder Keg shop in Merritt, BC, a well-known stop for local knowledge and reliable fly patterns. Many of those patterns have remained long-time staples in anglers’ boxes.
When damselflies are active on a lake, this pattern becomes especially effective. It is typically fished on an intermediate line, anchored in the shallows and stripped back toward shore, where takes can be aggressive and memorable.
