Electric Overdrive Fly Tying Tutorial

The Electric Overdrive is a flashy, high movement fly designed to get the attention of aggressive coho salmon. Built on a jig hook with a bright blue profile and plenty of reflective material, this pattern is designed to move, pulse, and throw light throughout the retrieve.

The Electric Overdrive can certainly be swung, but that is not what it was originally designed for. This is a fly meant to be actively fished and stripped. Think of it much like fishing a small lure, except the angler is creating the speed, depth, and action with a fly rod.

Line choice will depend largely on water depth and current speed. In shallower or slower water, a floating line may be all that is required to keep the fly fishing effectively. As the water gets deeper or the current gets stronger, an intermediate tip can help maintain depth and keep the fly under control throughout the retrieve. A full intermediate line is another option when more consistent depth is needed, particularly in deeper or faster water.

The retrieve is where anglers should experiment. Short, sharp strips give the Electric Overdrive a quick, erratic action, while longer pulls create a more deliberate swimming movement. Try changing the speed and cadence, mixing short and long strips, and adding the occasional pause.

Coho can respond very differently to the retrieve from one day to the next. Rather than immediately changing flies when fish are not responding, anglers should experiment with retrieve speed, retrieve style, and depth. Sometimes a small change in how the fly is moving through the water is all it takes to trigger a fish.

With its combination of movement, colour, and a serious amount of flash, the Electric Overdrive is not intended to be subtle. It is designed to get noticed and then come alive when the angler starts stripping.

Tie a few, experiment with different retrieves and line setups, and see what gets a response.
