The Quiet Riot is a compact freshwater coho pattern designed for situations where a smaller, more subtle presentation can make the difference. While larger, brighter flies are often effective for coho, pressured fish or fish that have stopped responding aggressively can sometimes be triggered by simply downsizing.
The olive and orange version featured in this video combines a more natural overall profile with a small hotspot and just enough flash to get noticed. The pattern can also be tied in a range of colour combinations to suit different water conditions and fish behaviour.
The Quiet Riot is designed to be fished on a strip retrieve. In shallower water, it can be fished on a floating line, either on a standard leader or with an intermediate poly leader or sink tip to get the fly slightly deeper. A full intermediate line is another excellent option when the fish are holding deeper or when the fly needs to stay below the surface throughout the retrieve.
Start with short, deliberate strips and experiment with the speed and length of the retrieve. If the coho are following without committing, changing the retrieve or adding pauses can be just as important as changing the fly.
