CDC Stickleback Fly Tying Tutorial

The CDC Stickleback is a simple but deadly pattern that imitates one of the most common food sources in lakes and slow rivers. Sticklebacks are small, flashy baitfish, and trout recognize them instantly.

This fly uses CDC feathers to create a soft, natural movement in the water. Even when you’re not stripping the fly, the CDC breathes and pulses, making it look alive. A touch of flash helps mimic the shine of a real baitfish without being overdone.

Fish the CDC Stickleback on an intermediate or slow-sinking line with short, steady strips. Pause often and let the fly hover, this is usually when the fish will take the fly. It’s especially effective around weed edges, drop-offs, and shallow flats where sticklebacks live.

If trout are feeding on baitfish and ignoring bigger streamers, this pattern can be the perfect match.
