ASB & Merlot Chironomid Fly Tying Tutorial

The ASB & Merlot fly pattern is designed to resemble a chironomid (midge) in its pupal stage, featuring distinctive maroon or reddish-burgundy ribbing. Chironomids are abundant in nearly all stillwaters in BC and serve as a vital food source for trout.

This colour variation is particularly prevalent in the interior regions of British Columbia, making it an excellent choice during spring and early fall when fish are feeding on gassed-up chironomids with maroon ribbing.

We recommend tying this pattern with white and copper beads as well, and in sizes #18–14. When tying smaller sizes, make sure you adjust your bead size (#18: 1/16, #16: 5/64) and ASB (#18–16: 0.5 mm) width to match the hook size.

The ASB & Merlot is both reliable and effective for targeting fish when these bugs are present.
