Shimano Calcutta B Baitcasting Reel Review

This Shimano Calcutta B baitcasting reel review will be full of praise. Shimano Calcutta B Baitcasting Reels are one of the most solid baitcasting reels we have ever sold.

We sell these reels primarily as a freshwater reel for salmon and steelhead but it is possible to use these reels for saltwater applications without worry.  The Calcutta’s frame is a one-piece machined aluminum frame making it an incredibly strong and durable reel.

Bearings

The reel has 4 bearings: 3-ball bearings and one roller bearing. These bearings are an A-RB bearing (Anti-Rust Bearing) and they are very smooth. Paired with Shimano’s Super Free Spool technology (eliminates friction on the spool shaft during a cast), it makes for effortless, silky-smooth casting.

Sizes

Calcutta B’s are available in a variety of sizes. The 100 (5.8:1 gear ratio) is the smallest size, 200 and the 201 (6.0:1 gear ratio) are the same size. The 201 is a left-handed retrieve. The 400 (5.0:1 gear ratio) is the next size and finally the 700 (4.7:1 gear ratio) is the largest.

The 400 size is our most common all-purpose model for salmon and steelhead, holding approximately 150-160 yards of 20lb mono.  The 200 and 201 is used in our fisheries as lighter duty reels. They are popular with coho and steelhead anglers when using a lighter mainline. The 200 size reel will hold approximately 100-110 yards of 15lb mono.

Durability

The durability of these reels is very note-worthy. Even with heavy usage it is a rarity to see parts, such as the worm gear (the long gear that helps drive the line guide), fail on these reels.

Maintenance

Like any piece of equipment with moving parts, it’s always good to service your reels occasionally, removing any dirt and re-lubricating necessary parts. This type of periodic maintenance will only increase the life of your reel. Shimano provides outstanding customer service for their reels. When you send a reel to them, they charge a flat rate service fee to clean and lubricate the reel. They will also replace any worn parts.

Verdict

Purchasing a Shimano Calcutta B reel for your freshwater salmon and steelhead fishing needs is highly recommended as this reel will provide you with years of reliable service. We hope you enjoyed this review.
