The tied down minnow has been a long time favourite here at Sea-Run Fly & Tackle for pursuing Cutthroat, particularly when salmon fry are present. The profile and colouration of this fly make it tough for these wily predators to resist! A 9-10' fly rod with a line rating of 4-6 will do the job just fine.
I like to fish a RIO Grand Premier Floating Fly Line with a 5-10' intermediate Airflo PolyLeader for Trout with a RIO PowerFlex Trout Tapered Leader ending at either 4 or 5x tippet. A full floating line with 9’ leader will suffice as would a line with an integrated intermediate tip.
A 4-to-6-inch strip roughly every second will usually trick these fish in to striking. I’ll throw the odd short quick strip in to see if that triggers a strike, especially if there are lots of fry in the water. Give this a try this spring and see how it works for you!
