Penn Squall Lever Drag Reel Review

In this Penn Squall Level Drag Reel Review we are going to take a closer look at what makes this a dependable and affordable big game fishing reel. The Penn Squall Lever Drag Reel has been an outstanding performer for customers and the staff of Sea-Run Fly and Tackle. This is a big game reel and it has put on a big game performance in reliability and affordability.

Safe for Saltwater Usage

The Squall is a saltwater-capable reel and has put in some serious time on many customers' rods as well as our staff members' for Halibut, Lingcod and Sturgeon.  The Squall’s frame and side plates are made from a graphite composite. This helps to prevent corrosion from saltwater while keeping the reel lightweight.

Sizes

The Squall 40 (our most popular size) offers 20lbs of drag and a 5.1:1 gear ratio. The Squall 60 has 33lbs of drag and a 4.3:1 gear ratio. The stainless-steel main drive and pinion gear of these reels is solidly built. It doesn't get weak or that tough-to-reel feeling when under the load of a large fish or the heavy weight commonly used in big game fisheries.

Both the 40 and 60 sizes can be purchased in the right or left-handed retrieve.  The Penn Squall is one of the very few big game reels available in a left-handed retrieve.

Design

The Penn Squall Lever Drag Reel does not come with a levelwind line guide on it. This is an advantage on a big game fishing reel because it eliminates three possible reel malfunctions. These malfunctions can occur in the main drive gear that drives the levelwind mechanism (always a plastic gear for safety reasons), the worm gear and the worm gear pawl. If any one of these fail, the reel becomes inoperable which is not a good thing when you have the catch of a lifetime on the end of your line!

All in all, the Penn Squall is tried and tested. It’s a great choice for a big game reel.
