Caring for and Cleaning Your Fly Lines

When fly fishing, your fly line is a major player. It’s incredibly important in getting your fly to the fish. Over the course of time, we have seen remarkable advances in the design of fly lines' taper, the materials that they are manufactured from and coatings that are applied to them.

Given the importance and cost of your line, maintenance is something that will improve the performance and help to maximize its life. Even with the advanced material technology used in the slick coatings to repel water and dirt, your lines should still be cleaned.

How to clean a fly fishing line

Fly line maintenance is something that is often overlooked by most anglers but it is a super easy task to perform. Our favourite and most highly-recommended products for fly line maintenance is the Scientific Anglers Cleaning Pads or the Scientific Anglers Fly Line Dressing Combo Pack.

Scientific Anglers Cleaning Pads

The Cleaning Pads have two sides to them. One side is grey and has a mildly abrasive surface and the other is a spongy foam side. To clean your line, simply pinch it between the grey surface pad and pull it through. This action will pull all the dirt and grime off the line. You’ll most likely be quite amazed at how much stuff is on the pad afterwards. By removing all the dirt, you’ll help the line shoot through the guides more easily.

Scientific Anglers Fly Line Dressing Combo Pack

The Scientific Anglers Fly Line Dressing Combo Pack contains the cleaning pads as well as a bottle of line dressing. After cleaning the line, apply the dressing using the spongy side, pinch the line and pull it through the same way as you did when you cleaned it.

The dressing helps to increase the slickness of the line as well as the floatability, so make sure the dressing is used only on floating fly lines. The cleaning process can be used on both fresh and saltwater fly lines. It’s so quick and simple it can easily be done while on the water.

Very useful. I’ve used the combo pack for some time and I’ll stop by and get the cleaning pads. How many times can a person use one of the cleaning pads.
